Does the creative highlight of your day consist of crafting a subtly witty yet beautiful Instagram post? Or is that just us? Maybe that’s why an hour on Pinterest can feel so damn good, but that probably doesn’t count!
Here comes the science bit
A 2010 literature review by Stuckey and Noble writes that, ‘the idea that creative expression can make a powerful contribution to the healing process has been embraced in many different cultures.’ They reviewed literature on the benefits of the arts (music, visual arts, dance and writing) and concluded that creativity was linked to positive health outcomes.
Right Brain vs Left Brain vs Whole Brain
The dichotomous brain that was touted not too long ago turns out to be a bit of an oversimplification (the right brain is creative! The left brain is logical!). However, taking time out to nurture your creativity, in whatever area that might interest you, does seem to help broaden the way you think in general. You may find yourself opening up and the ideas just keep on flowing.
So whether it’s through music or art, writing or sewing, why not carve out some time from your schedule and mix things up. The rewards may be endless!
